About Is It Open NZ

IsItOpen.co.nz answers one question fast: is it open on the public holiday? We cover 31 of the stores and services New Zealanders ask about most, including supermarkets, big retailers, pharmacies, liquor stores, service stations, takeaways, the main banks and NZ Post. We cover 32 days from Hawke's Bay Anniversary Day 2026 to Boxing Day 2027: every national public holiday, Easter Sunday (a restricted trading day) and each regional anniversary day.

Why we built it

Public holidays in New Zealand come with rules that catch people out. Most shops must close on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day and until 1pm on Anzac Day. Some councils allow Easter Sunday trading. Holidays that fall on a weekend are Mondayised, and every region has its own anniversary day. Search results are full of last year's hours and copied lists. We wanted one place that gives a straight answer and shows exactly where it came from.

Who we are

Is It Open NZ is a small, independent website. It isn't owned by, affiliated with, or endorsed by any store, bank, government body or other organisation we list. Nobody pays us to include a store or to say it's open.

How we decide an answer

In short: the company's own announcements first, New Zealand trading and alcohol law second, and "check your local store" when neither gives a clear answer. We never guess, and we never present last year's hours as this year's. Every answer links its source and the date we last checked it (currently 2026-10-16). Right now 95 of 992 answers are backed by a source. The rest say "check local" until a store publishes its opening hours. Read the full method on How we check hours.

Trademarks and logos

Store names and logos shown on this site are trademarks of their respective owners. We use them only to identify the store an answer is about. Their use doesn't imply any affiliation with or endorsement of Is It Open NZ. We only show logo files that are in the public domain on Wikimedia Commons. Other stores show their initials.

How the site is funded

The site may show ads from Google AdSense in future to cover its costs. Ads never change an answer. See our privacy policy for how advertising cookies would work.
