About Canterbury Anniversary Day 2026
Canterbury Anniversary Day is the regional anniversary day for North and Central Canterbury. In 2026 it's observed on Friday, 13 November. The anniversary itself is 16 December. North and Central Canterbury observe Christchurch Show Day, which Christchurch City sets as the second Friday after the first Tuesday in November.
Employment New Zealand notes that provincial anniversary days follow the old 19th-century provinces rather than today's council boundaries, and suggests checking with your local council for the most reliable date. No law makes shops close on an anniversary day, so each store sets its own hours.
NZ Post lists Canterbury Anniversary Day among the regional days that can affect delivery times and asks you to allow one to two extra working days for mail.
