Closed by law (restricted trading day)
Christmas Day 2026 is a restricted trading day: under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990, shops like Farmers must stay closed all day. Only exempt shops, such as dairies, service stations, pharmacies and takeaways, can open. A handful of areas have old exemption orders, such as the Queenstown district and Paihia, so a few stores there may differ.
