Closed by law (restricted trading day)
Christmas Day 2026 is a restricted trading day: under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990, shops like PAK'nSAVE must stay closed all day. Only exempt shops, such as dairies, service stations, pharmacies and takeaways, can open. Supermarkets also can't sell alcohol that day under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act. A handful of areas have old exemption orders, such as the Queenstown district and Paihia, so a few stores there may differ.
